Biomaterial & Sustainable Solution -Antibacterial Shell Powder

The Magical Transformation of Oyster Shells: A Journey of Wonder

Oysters are a key economic resource along the western coast of Taiwan. However, discarded oyster shells pile up, causing environmental problems. These piles attract mosquitoes and emit bad odours, affecting the local scenery. Taiwan produces nearly 120,000 tons of oyster shell waste annually. Recycling these shells through special treatments not only reduces pollution but also transforms them into substances with antibacterial properties.

The Magical Transformation of Oyster Shells: A Journey of Wonder

Knowledge of Calcined Oyster Shell Powder

"Calcination" involves heating raw materials to cause chemical and physical changes. Under a scanning electron microscope, we see that raw oyster shell powder is lamellar, but after high-temperature calcination, it becomes porous. This increases its surface area from 182 m²/g to 248 m²/g and refines the particle size. Calcined oyster shell powder also shows improved adsorption capacity for low molecular weight substances and has demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal properties against various bacteria and fungi.
